Spongostan is a sterile absorbable haemostatic gelatin sponge that is malleable and intended for haemostatic use by applying to a bleeding surface. Spongostan absorbable haemostatic gelatin sponge is a sterile, water-insoluble, malleable sponge intended for haemostatic use by applying to a bleeding surface.

Spongostan will create a barrier together with fibrin which will stop the bleeding in 2–10 minutes and will be completely absorbed in 4–6 weeks.
Spongostan has a neutral pH and can absorb 45 times its own weight.
